The Matrix Of Time

Concept

Through the study of the historical periods of the citadel, we figured out that there are some parts of the building contains walls from different eras in the same space, which make a Time lapse in different spaces inside the citadel. However, that would be clearer in the south part of the citadel which ends up with the excavation area that contains foundations for a Byzantine building. It seems like this area is relating all the periods together because of its surrounding inside the citadel.

The purpose is to open the citadel to the public and allow the people to know more about this place in the center of the city so the excavation area would be an attraction and a very useful point for all the visitors, so here come to the concept to relate this area with the visiting path.

The visitor path will follow a special grid which follows the citadel structure and typology. and it will take the tourists through different activities that include modern art galleries, traditional art galleries, workshops for students, a museum with its patio for old military showing and weapons, cafe and restaurant and an outdoor theatre to have concerts inside the citadel as it was before. the walking paths in the citadel’s square are so important and servable too so most of the activities will extend from inside the building to the square. However, a historical site can't have heavy structure so everything has to be flexible and able to be taken apart.

External Art Workshops Concept

The artists workshops in the citadel’s square are inspired by the darts space where the soldiers used to hide and attack from to make the harmony with the citadel’s spaces. also, those structures are flexible and can be removed when it’s necessary.

The Museum of Damascus citadel

The museum is on the east part of the castle. It used to be a prison before and it has been restored in 2007.

The museum patio, as an extension of the museum, shows some old weapons that were used to fight in the middle ages, there’s also some excavation in it showing some building’s foundation in that place.
However, some battles shows can happen in this place on some special occasions.
